{"id":146658,"date":"2026-04-23T20:21:51","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T00:21:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medcitynews.com\/?p=146658"},"modified":"2026-04-23T20:21:51","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T00:21:51","slug":"silicon-valley-health-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medcitynews.com\/2026\/04\/silicon-valley-health-tech\/","title":{"rendered":"Top Silicon Valley VCs Are Backing a New Health Tech Residency Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aihfund.com\/\">The AI Health Fund<\/a> launched a new residency program this week called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20260422083156\/en\/Treehub-by-AI-Health-Fund-Launches-to-Scout-the-Next-Generation-of-Founders-in-Academia-and-Science\">Treehub<\/a>, which aims to fund early-stage healthcare AI startups coming out of academic labs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program will run cohort-based residencies in Los Altos, California. It aims to bridge the gap between research and venture-backed companies by providing funding, mentorship and development infrastructure in the very early stages of a startup \u2014 often before the company is even formally created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the people involved with scouting and mentoring early-stage founders include prominent Silicon Valley figures such as Tim Draper, billionaire founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfj.com\/\">Draper Fisher Jurvetson<\/a>, and Anne Wojcicki, entrepreneur and co-founder of the beleaguered <a href=\"https:\/\/medcitynews.com\/tag\/23andme\/\">23andMe<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program\u2019s founder, investor and former Google executive Mary Minno, was driven to start Treehub after a personal healthcare experience showed her that the system isn\u2019t designed to reliably keep patients alive, despite the clear dedication of clinicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis started in a deeply personal place. I was postpartum with my second child when I had a family member get really sick, and I got a front row seat at the state of our medical system \u2014 and I couldn&#8217;t unsee what I had seen,\u201d Minno declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She then teamed up with Esther Wojcicki \u2014 mother of Anne, as well as anthropologist Janet and the late former YouTube CEO Susan \u2014 to launch the residency program, through which they started making investments in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minno noted that Treehub funds startups across three areas: precision outcomes, care efficiency and novel science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program now has 12 companies in its portfolio, she said. Some include a stealth company she called \u201cUber for dermatology;\u201d a stealth brain computer interface startup led by <a href=\"https:\/\/forestneurotech.org\/\">Forest Neurotech<\/a> co-founder Will Biederman; and <a href=\"https:\/\/wearclair.com\/\">Clair Health<\/a>, which offers noninvasive hormone tracking for women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor more than half of our portfolio companies, we introduce the founders to the lawyers that help them incorporate. So when I say we&#8217;re early stage, we&#8217;re extremely early,\u201d Minno pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that Treehub helps founders with the nuts and bolts of starting a company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe help from everything from the day zero things like finding the right co-founders, setting up the entity, and doing all the legal things, all the way through to what we call graduation. Graduation for every company looks different. Some want to raise the big seed round. Some want to join an accelerator. Some have aspirations to deploy across a hospital system,\u201d Minno explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Treehub focuses heavily on early-stage execution, Esther Wojcicki pointed to a more fundamental determinant of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To Wojcicki, the most crucial factor determining a startup prosperity isn\u2019t its technical brilliance, but the founders\u2019 ability to work well together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSocial emotional skills \u2014 a lot of these founders don&#8217;t have them, I&#8217;m sorry to say. And that&#8217;s not their fault. It&#8217;s more the fault of the system. But we try to help them develop these skills that are really important. How to work with each other is kind of the key. And you look around and see all the companies that have failed, and the main thing that they&#8217;ve recently failed at is the founders all started fighting with each other,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Treehub, she focuses on helping founders build these interpersonal skills. Wojcicki also emphasized the importance of humility and adaptability, noting that great founders must be willing to admit when ideas aren\u2019t working and pivot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She thinks Treehub\u2019s early-stage approach and emphasis on founder development \u2014 especially before individuals even see themselves as founders \u2014 sets it apart from traditional accelerators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minno agreed, saying that by investing so early and focusing on founders rather than fully formed businesses, Treehub can help teams iterate and find viable paths in the right environment.
